QMC’s Gary Reneau sits down with the retired senior partner of a major global consulting firm/family office principal to discuss the state of the hedge fund industry today and the challenges facing family offices when investing in hedge funds. The gentleman we spoke to has been a member of an external advisory committee for a $20BB Fund of Funds for over ten years.

How to Choose a Money Manager,
By the Investment Strategies Committee

How to choose a high-quality investment manager was the question posed by Bruce Alan Mann, chair of the Investment Strategies Committee, to Marc Rosenberg, founder and president of Quality Manager Consultants (“QMC”). Mr. Rosenberg and his colleague, Chartered Financial Analyst Gary Reneau, have advised high-net-worth individuals, family offices, and institutions for over 25 years on how to build a portfolio of fund managers that will perform in both calm and tumultuous times and on how to know when to hire and fire a manager.

Trends

"More hedge funds closed their doors in 2015 than at any time since the financial crisis, according to new research, as turbulent markets dragged down the industry's performance.

"...systematic hedge funds that surf trends using financial models and algorithms have dominated the lists of the best-performing funds. Trend-following and quantitative specialists, often known as commodity trading advisers due to their legal set-up, tend to profit when markets have a clear direction. They have lost money in four of the past five years."
